R-134a
R-134a is one of the worlds most used refrigerants, as it is very diverse and widely embedded in automotive, commercial, and residential air conditioning systems, across the world.

What is R-134a?
R-134a (1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane) is a widely used hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant, designed primarily for medium-temperature refrigeration and air conditioning applications. It has been a key choice in automotive air conditioning systems, domestic refrigerators, and commercial refrigeration units. Known for its stability and efficiency, R-134a operates at moderate pressures and delivers reliable performance across various conditions.
Systems utilizing R-134a are designed to work with POE (Polyolester) lubricants for compatibility and efficient operation. Although retrofitting older systems to use R-134a is possible with professional modifications, its use is gradually being phased down under global regulations like the Kigali Amendment and EU F-Gas Regulation. Lower-GWP alternatives, such as HFOs, are replacing R-134a in many applications, but it remains a reliable and non-toxic A1-rated refrigerant for existing systems and specialized uses.
Important Note

Key Properties of R-134a
Low Boiling Point
Boils at (1 atm, °F): -14.9, making it efficient for automotive AC systems.
Low Pressure Operation
Operates at lower pressures than R-22, requiring similar but differently designed equipment.
Reduced Energy Efficiency
Offers less energy efficiency compared to older refrigerants like R-22, but better than R-1234yf.
Zero Ozone Depletion
Has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0, making it safer for the environment.
Global Warming Potential
Has a GWP of 1430, which is significant but lower than some alternatives.
Non-Flammable
Classified as A1 (lowest toxicity, no flame propagation) by ASHRAE.
