R-407C

R-407C is a non-ozone-depleting R-22 replacement because of its similar cooling capacity, energy efficiency, and pressures as R-22 in systems, as well as replace R-502 for some existing medium-temperature applications.

What is R-407C?

R-407C (a blend of hydrofluorocarbons: R-32, R-125, and R-134a) is a widely used refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, primarily designed as a retrofit option for systems originally using R-22. It is an ideal solution for medium and low-temperature applications and has gained popularity in residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC systems. R-407C offers a good balance of efficiency, performance, and environmental impact, with properties similar to R-22, making it a go-to alternative during the transition away from ozone-depleting substances.

Operating at moderate to high pressures, R-407C is compatible with POE (Polyolester) lubricants, ensuring smooth operation in retrofitted systems. While it does not have the same ozone depletion potential as R-22, it still carries a relatively high Global Warming Potential (GWP). As a result, its use is being phased out in favor of lower-GWP refrigerants in line with international regulations, such as the EU F-Gas Regulation and the Kigali Amendment. However, R-407C remains a valuable and reliable refrigerant for existing systems and applications where retrofitting is necessary and no immediate alternatives are available.

R-407C Refrigerant Cylinder

Key Properties of R-407C

Low Boiling Point

Boils at (1 atm, °F): -43.6, making it efficient for air conditioning and refrigeration systems..

Moderate-High Pressure Operation

Operates at higher pressures than R-22, requiring retrofitting to operate smoothly.

Reduced Energy Efficiency

Offers slightly less energy efficiency compared to older refrigerants like R-22, but it is suitable for retrofitting existing R-22 systems with minimal modifcations.

Zero Ozone Depletion

Has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0, making it safer for the environment.

Global Warming Potential

Has a GWP of 1770, which is significant but lower than some alternatives.

Non-Flammable

Classified as A1 (lowest toxicity, no flame propagation) by ASHRAE.
